Book Burning Anniversary
Book Burning Anniversary 2013
Installation at St Kilda Library
“No to to decadence and moral corruption… I consign to the flames the writings of Heinrich Mann, Ernst Glaser, Erich Kastner”.
– Dr Goebbels
In August 2013 I held an installation at the St Kilda Town Hall showcasing the book bonfires in Berlin 1933. I had been to Berlin in May and had gone to Bebelplatz where the actual burnings had takenplace in 1933. A commemorative event had been held only a week earlier and a wreath placed in the centre of the square at the Humboldt University marked the spot where hundreds of books had been burnt.
Initiated by the German Students Association the torching of the books was attended by Dr. Goebbles, the propaganda minister, who began the proceedings by declaring: “No to to decadence and moral corruption… I consign to the flames the writings of of Heinrich Mann, Ernst Glaser,Erich Kastner”.
One of the many books burned by the German Students Federation was the Karl Marx classic, “The Communist Manifesto”.
This book by Erich Maria Remarque was considered un-German as it was pacifist and anti-war.
A list of writers and some of the books which were deemed to be un-German.
